Here at Ring, we love to see how families put their Video Doorbells and Security Cameras to good use. A lot of our customer videos are of nice family moments, a curious animal or maybe a stranger on someone’s porch. But every now and then, we get videos that are downright scary.
Luckily, thanks to motion-activated alerts and two-way talk, Ring was able to keep the homeowners safe during these frightening incidents, but they still show just how important it is to be “Always Home” with Ring.
Take a peek at some of the scariest moments we’ve caught on Ring, and feel free to share your own stories in the comments below.
8. Scary Clown Comes to Visit
Last year, a frightening trend swept through the country. All across the U.S., people were dressing up as clowns and terrorizing all of us. Luckily, no one was seriously hurt by these evil-looking clowns, but they certainly left a terrifying impression.
Ring homes weren’t immune from the craze, and we caught one sneaking around a house in Toledo. We’re not sure if this was staged or not, but it was definitely a scary sight.
7. A Rude Awakening
It was about 4:30 in the morning when a homeowner from Portland got a Ring alert. His family was getting ready to catch an early flight, so the homeowner assumed it was just his wife putting luggage in their car. But when he walked outside, he got a surprise.
Outside his door was a man trying to steal a grocery bag off his porch. Immediately, the man took off, and without thinking, the homeowner chased after him.
The homeowner would later admit that it was “not the brightest idea” to chase after the thief, but the commotion that ensued awoke his entire neighborhood. The cops were called, and they found a female accomplice hiding out in a neighbor’s car.
Relieved, the homeowner credits Ring with giving him and his family peace of mind: “We felt much better leaving town knowing that our Ring would alert us to any activity near the front door.”
6. Cops Are on the Way!
A homeowner in Dallas was at work when she received a Ring notification on her phone. When she answered the notification, she saw two strangers at her front door. The two men noticed the camera in her Ring Video Doorbell, and they immediately took off.
Suspicious of the two men, the homeowner stayed on the line instead of hanging up. And sure enough, just a couple minutes later, the two men returned and tried to kick down the door. Luckily, with the help of Ring’s two-way talk, the homeowner was able to warn them that the police were on the way.
The homeowner reached out to Ring, and together, we took to social media to warn Dallas residents about the suspects that were lurking in their area. In just a couple weeks, the two men were arrested and behind bars.
5. Stranger Wants to Smash Everything
It’s always scary when you find a stranger lurking in your yard. That’s what Andrew, a homeowner in Sacramento, saw when he answered a Ring notification while at work. He politely asked the stranger to leave his yard, and that’s when things got really scary.
The stranger appeared intoxicated and walked up to Andrew’s door to confront him. Andrew then told him that if he didn’t leave, he would call the police. After a few words were exchanged, the stranger tried to kick down Andrew’s door, telling him that he was “going to smash what’s in there.”
The stranger was unable to gain access to Andrew’s house, and as promised, the police arrived a few minutes later to arrest the man.
4. The Masked Man Returns
Finding a masked man at your front door in the middle of the night can be pretty scary, but when that man returns to your home three times in one week, it’s downright frightening.
That’s what happened to the Gerber family in Milford, Conn. The Gerbers had bought a Ring Video Doorbell to watch over their home while on vacation over a hundred miles away. Just a couple days into their vacation, Ring alerted them of a masked man at their front door. Luckily, he wasn’t able to break-in, but just a few days later, the masked man returned.
The Gerbers sent the videos to police and local news stations, hoping the attempted break-ins would stop, but the man returned again.
This time, however, the Gerbers were waiting for him – and so were the cops. Instead of watching the masked man try to break into their home, the Gerbers watched him get arrested on their Ring Video Doorbell.
3. A Neighborhood Burns on Ring
Matt Bell was at work in Overland Park, Kansas, when he received a notification from Ring. But instead of seeing a visitor at his door, he saw a pair of men trying to put out flames in his front yard.
Just a few minutes earlier, an apartment behind Bell’s home had caught fire, and it was spreading throughout his neighborhood. The fire had reached his yard, and neighbors were frantically trying to put it out.
Bell immediately left work and raced home, expecting to see his house in flames. Thankfully, his quick-thinking neighbors put out the fire in his yard, and his home escaped with only minor damage.
2. Smiling Salesman Becomes Fugitive Felon
While this smiling visitor may not look very scary, his backstory certainly is.
The “visitor” is Joseph Ramos, and when he came to this homeowner’s door in San Diego, he was wanted for at least 19 home burglaries in surrounding communities. The homeowner was able to see past his friendly demeanor and felt it was suspicious. And when the video was shared with police, they immediately identified Ramos and went on a manhunt.
Ramos was spotted by police in a nearby neighborhood, and he hijacked a car at gunpoint in an attempt to getaway. He didn’t get very far, and a gun battle between him and the police ended with Ramos wounded and in custody.
1. Saved by the (Ring Door)Bell
At around four o’clock in the morning, the Ghan family in Clovis, Calif., received a Ring notification on their phone. There wasn’t anybody at their home; instead, there was a fire at a neighbor’s house across the street, and it raged so fiercely that it triggered a motion alert.
Catherine Ghan immediately ran across the street to alert their neighbors, who were all fast asleep. If the Ghans hadn’t received the alert and acted quickly, this story could have had a much sadder ending. Luckily, everyone escaped without serious injury.
As Catherine said, “It is more than just crime prevention; it’s life saving!”
Reducing Crime in Neighborhoods
With the help of Ring Video Doorbells and Security Cameras, these homeowners were able to avoid real tragedies. On top of that, they also helped make their community a better place by supporting their neighbors and working to get criminals off the streets.
While Ring helps people stay connected to their homes and their families, the real heros are the diligent homeowners and neighbors whose fast thinking helped prevent disaster.
