A New Ring of Security: Introducing Ring Security for Cars
By Jamie Siminoff, Chief Inventor and Founder on September 24, 2020
One of the best parts of my job at Ring is hearing directly from our customers. With my email on every box, I hear from them daily and the number one product customers have been requesting over the years is a product that keeps their car secure. We listened, and today I’m excited to announce a new lineup of security products specifically designed for cars.
This new line of products brings everything people love about Ring to the car – they are easy-to-use, affordable and effective. And we created several devices to ensure that no matter what car you drive, or what your specific needs are, there’s a solution for you.
Ring Car Alarm
Ring Car Alarm is an affordable solution designed to protect the car at home and around the neighborhood. Packed with sensors, the device sends an alert immediately to the Ring app when it detects an event, such as a bump, break-in, tow-away or an attempt to open the door. When you receive the alert you can quickly check the last-known location of the vehicle and take action by triggering the built-in siren.
There’s no subscription thanks to the Amazon Sidewalk Network, which wirelessly sends alerts and location information to the Ring App when in coverage. You can even link your compatible Alexa-enabled devices to have the alerts announced over your home speakers.
Best of all, the Ring Car Alarm links to other Ring devices, such as the Ring Floodlight Cam, turning the device into a virtual tripwire that can activate additional deterrents and video recording when triggered.
Ring Car Cam
Ring Car Cam takes car security a step further and helps protect you and your vehicle regardless of whether you are driving or parked. This car security camera is full of features that help keep you, your loved ones and your car safe. Similar to Ring Car Alarm, when your car is parked, the sensors monitor for bumps and attempted break-ins, sending a real-time alert to the Ring app. With its dual-facing HD cameras, you can see a live view and check-in on what’s happening in and around the vehicle from anywhere over WiFi or LTE¹.
I’m most excited about two smart features that protect you on the road. Our Emergency Crash Assist¹ feature will automatically request help from first responders if a serious crash is detected. And, in the event you get pulled over, with the Traffic Stop feature, you can just say “Alexa, I’m being pulled over” and the interior facing camera will record the interaction, save it to the cloud and send a notification to your loved ones to keep them in the loop¹.
As with everything we do at Ring, privacy was foundational in bringing Ring Car Cam to life. When parked, the camera only starts recording when the smart sensors detect an event and there is an LED light to indicate when the video and microphone is enabled. There is also a physical camera shutter that both blocks the lens and electronically disables the interior video and audio. You also have control over your data, ranging from the ability to delete all videos to being able to easily toggle off location information in Control Center.
Ring Car Connect
Newer cars are automatically integrating interior and exterior cameras into their design to bring customers peace of mind for things like back-up assist, blind spot notification and more. With Ring Car Connect, an API for car manufacturers, we’re bringing customers this information right to their Ring app, by offering a way to integrate cars with the Ring experience. Starting today, we will be working with car manufacturers to use this API, making it easy for customers to check in on what’s going on in and around their car from anywhere.
Ring Car Connect for Tesla
Building off the Ring Car Connect API, we created an aftermarket device specifically designed for Tesla models 3, X, S, and Y. With this, we’ve created a way to view Tesla Sentry Mode and recorded driving footage directly in the Ring App over WiFi or LTE¹.
Car Security for Everyone
With this new line of car products, we are taking Ring beyond the home, continuing to make neighborhoods safer. These products redefine how we protect our cars and the people in them by bringing the power of Ring whole-home security to the car in an affordable, easy-to-use way. I couldn’t be more excited to answer this call from our customers and I look forward to hearing how these new devices bring them peace of mind both at home and on the road.
¹ With optional connectivity plan.
