Why Choose a DIY Security System to Protect Your Small Business?

By Ring on July 21, 2023

Your business is your livelihood, and protecting it is critical. But even though small business security plays a huge role in your future success, you don’t need to shell out the big bucks to protect it.

You can help secure your business with a small business security system from Ring. Learn how our easy-to-install security products provide security and customization with price points to fit business owners’ budgets.

What DIY Business Security Means

Self-installed security systems aim to provide ease of installation and use, no matter your skill set. You can choose from several business security kits and optional add-ons, and when it comes time to install your security products, Ring gives you the option to do it yourself or hire a professional.

You should consider a Ring business security system if you:

  • Want to start using your system almost immediately after you get it instead of waiting for service appointments
  • Want the option to enroll in 24/7 Alarm Professional Monitoring1 for an additional fee, without getting stuck in a lengthy contract
  • Want a system that can grow with your business — you can add additional sensors or cameras at any time and even move your entire system to a new location
  • The Essential Parts of a DIY Business Security System

While self-installed business security systems are completely customizable to fit your needs, your Ring Alarm Kit or Ring Alarm Pro Kit comes with these core pieces:

    Alarm Base Station

The Base Station is the brain of your Alarm; it keeps your devices connected.

With an Alarm or Alarm Pro Base Station, you also get the option to link additional security devices with a Ring Protect subscription2, sold separately. From indoor and outdoor security cameras to smart locks, you can control all your security products from one App.

    Ring App

You can’t miss your Alarm going off when you're in your small business — you’ll hear the Base Station sound its built-in siren. But during times when you're away, you won't be there to hear it. That's where the Ring App1 comes in.

With a Ring Protect subscription, sold separately, you can get Alarm notifications straight to your phone, so you’ll know if your sensors are triggered when you’re taking a meeting across town or getting dinner ready for the kids at home. You can also add trusted employees to your account and share access to your Alarm notifications and camera footage3 (cameras sold separately), so your whole team can work together to help keep the business secure.

    Keypad

Your Ring App is a great way to check in on your business when you’re away, but the Keypad makes using your Alarm simple when you’re hard at work. The first employee to enter your business for the day can easily disarm the system if they expect customers to come and go soon, or they can set the Alarm to “Home” mode if they’ll be alone for a while and want to feel extra safe while they prepare for the day.

    Window and Door Contact Sensors

Whether your business is in a quaint standalone shop with lots of doors and windows or in the center of a strip mall with only two entrances, Window and Door Contact Sensors help keep all entry points secure. You put one side of these magnetic sensors on windows and doors and the other side on the frame. When the window or door opens, the magnetic connection breaks. When the magnetic connection breaks, it triggers your Alarm. With a Ring Protect subscription, you’ll get notifications whenever a door or window opens when the system is armed.

    Motion Detectors

There are certain areas of your business only you and your management team need to access, like the office where you keep confidential records and cash. No matter the time, Motion Detectors help make sure no one gets in without triggering your Alarm. You can place a Motion Detector in each office to get alerts when motion is detected inside your business with a Ring Protect subscription, sold separately.

If you want an additional set of eyes on your business — and even more peace of mind when you’re not around — you can enroll in Alarm Professional Monitoring1, included in your Ring Protect Pro subscription2. Whether a Contact Sensor or Motion Detector is triggered, an agent will notice the alert, attempt to call you and other emergency contacts, and dispatch the authorities if you request help or don’t answer.

Next-Level DIY Business Security Devices to Add Extra Protection

If you’re looking for extra layers of protection beyond your Ring Alarm, we offer several add-ons (sold separately) to help keep your business and community safe.

    Security Cameras

With indoor and outdoor security cameras, you can watch over important areas around the clock, like the cash register or parking lot. A Ring Protect subscription (sold separately) enables you to look through footage from the past 180 days and save important moments to share with your insurance company or even an employee — like footage of a happy customer praising their work.

You can use the Ring App to check in on Live View anytime or after receiving a Motion Alert. Two-Way Talk enables you to speak with visitors, even if you’re across town. Plus, some of our outdoor cams, like Floodlight Cam and Spotlight Cam, come with motion-activated lights that automatically shine bright when someone walks by.

    Video Doorbell

A Video Doorbell enables you to welcome visitors to your property anytime, from anywhere. Whether you’re stuck in the finance office when a vendor drops by or at the kitchen table when a customer arrives before opening, you’ll get a notification on your phone. From the Ring App, you can see who’s at the door with Live View and speak to the visitor through Two-Way Talk to ensure you don’t miss a potential customer.

If you won’t be able to catch every camera or doorbell notification and want an extra set of eyes on your entire Ring system, you can add Virtual Security Guard subscription, sold separately, to your Ring Protect Pro subscription. Highly trained Rapid Response security professionals can use Two-Way Talk4 and your compatible camera sirens to help deter uninvited visitors, and they’ll reach out immediately if something needs your attention.

    Panic Button

When you enroll in Alarm Professional Monitoring, experienced agents monitor your Alarm. But what if you need assistance when your system is disarmed? A Panic Button allows you to request help immediately with one push.

You can place Panic Buttons (sold separately) wherever you may need them, like under the store counter, beneath your receptionist’s desk, or in a room where valuables are kept.

    Glass Break Sensor

If someone tries to bypass your Door and Window Contact Sensors by breaking a window, our Glass Break Sensor (sold separately) has you covered. This small sensor can detect the sound of breaking glass to trigger your Alarm. You can mount sensors on the wall or ceiling or place them on furniture within 25 feet of the glass you want to monitor.

With a Ring Protect subscription, sold separately, you can even connect your Glass Break Sensor to doorbells or cameras and set them to begin recording when it triggers your Alarm1.

    Neighbors App

Your small business is a critical part of your community, and if you work together with other businesses and residents, you can help create a safer place for all. It’s easy to stay in the know about safety events in your area and make relevant posts to help others by downloading the Neighbors App by Ring.

Professional monitoring service is available only within the U.S. (all 50 states, but not U.S. territories) and in Canada (excluding Quebec). Ring does not own its own professional monitoring center. Smoke and carbon monoxide monitoring is not available for a business or commercially zoned address. See Ring alarm licenses at: ring.com/licenses. Additional permit or false alarm fees may apply depending on your local jurisdiction. Additional charges may apply in areas that require permits or guard response service for alarm verification.

Subscription sold separately. View ring.com/protect-plans for pricing and details.

3 Your Ring videos in the cloud are stored temporarily, up to 180 days. Changing your video storage time will only affect videos that are recorded after you adjust your storage time setting. Check Ring Protect Subscription Plans for more information.
