Habitat for Humanity and Ring Team Up to Build Safer, More Connected Communities
By Ring on November 30, 2020
At Ring, we are proud to work with incredible local and national organizations that help improve people’s lives and create safer places for families to grow. That’s why we’re thrilled to announce a new donation program with Habitat for Humanity, a global nonprofit that shares our commitment to helping make homes and neighborhoods safer.
Habitat envisions a world where everyone has a decent place to live, so they help families and individuals in need of affordable housing to build or improve a place they can call home. Habitat homeowners get access to an affordable mortgage and help build their own homes alongside volunteers. Through homeownership they gain not only a safe place to live, but also strength, stability and self-reliance.
Ring is supporting Habitat by donating $1 million worth of Ring Video Doorbells, along with Ring Protect Plan subscriptions for the life of each device and a Ring Security Yard Sign for every donated doorbell. The devices are available to any Habitat homeowner in the United States who’d like a Ring Video Doorbell installed at their newly built home in 2021, at no cost.
“At Ring, we believe when communities come together, safer neighborhoods become a reality,” says Leila Rouhi, president of Ring. “We are thrilled to be working with Habitat for Humanity, which has made incredible strides in helping build safer and stronger communities. Ring is always looking at ways we can make a meaningful impact on local communities and through this program, we hope to support Habitat’s mission by also providing families with added peace of mind in their new neighborhoods.”
That peace of mind translates to significant benefits for the homeowners that can last a lifetime – within the home and beyond: “Every family deserves a stable start in a safe and secure home, and we’re thankful to work with Ring to provide an added layer of safety and security for new Habitat homeowners,” says Julie Laird Davis, vice president of corporate and cause marketing partnerships at Habitat for Humanity International. “Families who feel safe and stable in their homes often achieve better education, employment opportunities, and maintain better health and wellness.”
Air Force Veteran Gets a Home He’s Dreamed of – and Peace of Mind
Ahead of the nationwide program launch, Ring donated Video Doorbells to four local Habitat for Humanity organizations as part of a pilot earlier this year. One of those groups was Habitat for Humanity of Lee and Hendry Counties in Florida, which helped make Air Force veteran Mark’s dream of owning a home come true.
Mark had been in a good spot when he retired from the Air Force: He had a stable job, volunteered by feeding individuals experiencing homelessness and was starting a family with his wife Teresa. But they fell on hard times. First, Teresa suffered an accident that led to months of health issues and a stack of medical bills that drained the family’s savings. Then Mark was laid off from his job of eight years. They even experienced a brief period of homelessness while they were working through the challenges.
It was Teresa’s idea to apply for a Habitat home and the family couldn’t believe it when they got selected. “We were just so hungry for stability,” Mark says. With access to an affordable mortgage, in April they were able to purchase their Fort Myers home – one that has helped them regain that stability they were looking for and allowed them to provide a safe place for their children to grow up. At long last, Mark says, the family is living the American dream: “I love my home. It’s changed our lives.”
In July, that house got an extra layer of security when Mark and Teresa’s family received a Ring Video Doorbell through the pilot program with their local Habitat organization.
With the Ring Video Doorbell, “our kids feel safe here,” Mark says. “When they’re outside riding bikes and skateboard[s] up and down the street, we don’t have to worry. We have peace of mind.”
After their previous experience, Mark and Teresa never take that feeling of security for granted.
“The Ring Doorbell has been fantastic for my family – it means everything to us,” Mark says. “We now have a refuge to go home to. Our home has turned into our safe place of solitude.”
In 2021, Habitat plans to build thousands of new homes across the United States for families like Mark’s. And by donating Ring Video Doorbells to Habitat and its homeowners, we’re proud to help make those homes and neighborhoods safer. Because everyone deserves a safe place to live, and the peace of mind that comes with it.
