By Ring on January 5, 2026

Baby, it's cold outside, but that won't stop us from making the most of winter's icy arrival! As the snow starts to fall, clearing paths and driveways becomes a necessity. But shoveling and snow blowing don't have to be a drag. With the right know-how and a little seasonal spirit, tackling winter weather can be a true delight. In this blog, we'll dive into the safety dos and don'ts for handling winter equipment. Then, get ready to be inspired by how some crafty Ring customers have found creative ways to be festive through the flurries.

Winter Weather Safety Tips

How to Stay Safe When Handling Winter Weather Equipment
With the winter season upon us, come heavy snowfall, making the need to quickly and safely clear walkways greater. Clearing snow and ice from walkways requires the use of specialized equipment that must be handled with great care. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration1 emphasizes the importance of grounding powered equipment, such as snow blowers to protect against electric shocks or electrocutions. If jammed, never attempt to clear the tool by hand. Turn the device off, wait for all moving parts to stop, and use a stick to clear debris. Never add fuel to snow blowers while running or when the engine is hot.

How to Prevent Falls on Icy Surfaces
You can prevent trips and slips on snowy and icy surfaces by wearing proper footwear like insulated, water resistant boots with a rubber tread.2 Take small steps and walk slower than your typical pace, so you can catch yourself in the event there's a change in traction.

Additional Winter Safety Tips

  • Ensure snow removal tools and machinery are inaccessible to children and if present, ensure an adult is nearby to ensure injuries don’t occur.
  • Be careful due to wandering wildlife (particularly bears) that may be out looking for food and or place to warm up.
  • While most bears may be hibernating during winter, some still can be active often searching for available food. So, it's important to stay vigilant to protect oneself and one's family by securing trash using bear-resistant containers, carrying bear spray, traveling or hiking in groups in areas where bear encounters can occur.
  • Keep walkways and driveways clear to prevent slips and trips by shoveling snow. If you’re feeling like a “snow angel,” you can offer to help shovel your neighbor’s driveway.
  • Invest in a Ring Flood and Freeze Sensor to be alerted about potential water leaks and freezes, as pipes are more likely to freeze during the winter. For more tips on how to utilize our Flood and Freeze Sensor, check out our guide here.

As the winter months bring the promise of fresh snowfall, it's important to balance necessary safety precautions with the joy and wonder the season can inspire. Let's see how Ring customers found creative ways to embrace their inner snow angels and make the most of winter's arrival.
  • A Need for (Snowy) Speed

One chilly winter morning, Matt's teenage son Graham decided it'd be more fun to haul his younger sisters on the back of the family's 4-wheeler rather than firewood for the home. Matt received an alert on his Ring app and decided to check his phone. “All I heard was faint screaming,” Matt recalls which left him concerned, and intrigued. “I kept watching and suddenly saw the quad blazing across the screen.” Having hauled the kids on the quad countless times, Matt couldn't help but laugh as he watched his son do the same. “I guess he thought, if Dad can do it, why can't I?” Matt continues, relieved his kids were having safe winter fun.

A Wild Guest Drops in for a Bear-y Surprising Visit

Marv was surprised to see a large bear investigating the decor on his family's front porch on his Ring Video Doorbell Pro. This was the first time they had caught a bear on their Ring device, despite occasionally seeing them roam through the neighborhood. Marv wasn't sure why the bear had decided to pay a visit, but he and his family were both shocked and excited by the unexpected encounter. While they felt lucky to catch this on camera, they were concerned for the safety of their dogs, who had just been outside. Luckily, the bear did not cause any damage and eventually moved on. This bear sighting was a thrilling and slightly unsettling glimpse into the wildlife that sometimes wanders through their community.

    Paws-itively Playful

Every time it snows, Mathuzalem clears off his deck and driveway and his 5-year-old Border Collie, Arrow, loves to join in on the fun. Arrow gets incredibly excited when his own starts throwing the shoveled snow in the air. The pup jumps, flips, and catches the snow, which Mathuzalem picked up on a few years ago after seeing a similar video of another Border Collie. Now, it's a cherished ritual that the whole family, and even the neighbors, get to enjoy whenever it snows.

When A Snow Angel Comes to Visit

After a heavy snowfall in Maryland that left nearly 10 inches of snow, Raymond’s daughter, Alexandra, went outside to make snow angels, something she had never done before due to the rare heavy snowfall in the area. When Alexandra came back inside, she told her father that an "angel had been on the deck." To Raymond's delight, the family's Ring camera had captured the sweet scene of Alexandra joyfully creating her own snow angel. Angels hold a special meaning for Alexandra and Raymond was touched to see his daughter's pure excitement over this winter wonderland experience.
