How a Smoke Alert Helped Save a Family’s Dog From a House Fire

By Ring on May 1, 2026

One evening Dana Griffin slipped out to pick up dinner for herself and her husband, Ryan, just before he stepped out to run a few errands of his own. While they were away, their long-haired Chihuahua, Moose, was home alone.

Fifteen minutes after Ryan walked out the door, everything changed. While at the restaurant, mid-conversation with Ryan, Dana’s Apple Watch buzzed, “Smoke detected in your home.” She paused. She thought, “Maybe it’s a glitch. Maybe the batteries in the smoke detector were dead.” She informed Ryan over the phone and the two waited to see if the notifications stopped...they continued to pour in.

Two minutes later, the smoke alarms in their home were triggered and 911 was dispatched. Dana raced home, while Ring called Ryan due to the triggered alarms. As she pulled into the driveway, she saw flames and smoke pouring out of the garage.

There was no time to hesitate because Moose was still inside. Dana ran in, found him, and brought him out to safety as smoke filled the house around her. Once outside, she called 911. Her husband arrived approximately two minutes later, already on the phone with emergency services.

The fire was the result of a lithium-ion battery from their lawn equipment that exploded. Emergency personnel contained the fire to the garage, but the chemical damage spread through the home. The smell, the smoke, and the residue forced the family to get rid of a lot, including personal belongings. Items that were memories. Things you simply can’t replace. But more importantly, everyone was safe and no injuries were reported.

Dana's husband is a retired disabled military veteran and has always taken home security seriously.

"Before I met my husband, I thought your products just consisted of cameras," Dana said. "I did not know about all the other amazing services you provide."

From cameras that cover every angle to a full security system, and Ring compatible smoke detectors, Dana admitted she once thought it was overkill.

"I thought he was crazy to pay for monthly home monitoring," she shared. "But now I'm beyond thankful that he did, because without that, things could've been way worse."

Dana and Ryan's story is a powerful reminder that home security isn't just about attempted break-ins or package thefts. It's about the threats you don't see coming. Whether it's a battery explosion in your garage or a wildfire approaching your neighborhood, Ring is here to help protect what matters most: your family, your pets, and your peace of mind.
