How to Save Energy With Ring Smart Lighting

By Ring on June 24, 2024

Ring smart lighting was designed to help make your home safer and your life a little easier. But our lighting also comes with an extra perk — it can help you reduce energy usage at home.

Follow these simple steps to help maximize your savings:

Install Long-Lasting LED Smart Bulbs Indoors

If you’re using incandescent light bulbs indoors, swapping them out with Ring A19 LED Smart Bulbs can be an instant energy-saver.1 According to energy.gov, LED lights use 75% less energy and last 25 times longer than incandescent bulbs.

With typical use, Ring smart bulbs last an estimated 25,000 hours, which means you can go years without changing them. Plus, you can use them anywhere you already have standard light bulbs, including protected areas outside.

Switch to Solar-Powered Ring Smart Lighting Outdoors

Illuminating your outdoor spaces, landscaping, and pathways at night doesn’t require any extra energy. With solar-powered Pathlights, Steplights, and Wall Lights from Ring, you can harvest the sun’s energy during the day and showcase your curb appeal after dark.2

If you need extra-bright light around your driveway, yard, or entryways, you can also install solar-powered Floodlights. Just place the solar panel in direct sunlight, and your device will automatically recharge. Need more power after a cloudy day? Our solar lights come with rechargeable batteries, just in case. You can also place efficient battery-powered Pathlights or Spotlights in areas that routinely don’t get enough sun.

Set Schedules for Your Ring Smart Lighting

Once your indoor and outdoor Ring smart lighting is set up and connected to a Ring Bridge (sold separately) you can start taking advantage of even more energy-saving features.3

Schedules enable you to automatically turn lights on when you need them and off when you don’t, so you’re not wasting energy lighting an empty room. For example, you can set all your indoor lights to turn off when you usually leave for work. You won’t have to flip any switches as you head out the door, and you’ll automatically conserve energy while you’re away. If your schedule changes, you can adjust your lighting from the Ring App, no matter where you are.

With a Ring Outdoor Smart Plug connected to your Ring Bridge, you can also set schedules for non-smart lighting, like holiday or string lights.2 Instead of trekking out into the snow, rain, or sweltering heat, a few quick taps can turn off all your devices in the Ring App.

Take Advantage of Motion Activation and Dimming

If your outdoor lights shine at full brightness throughout the night, you’re using energy you don’t really need. That’s why Ring smart lights are motion-activated. When someone walks out into the yard or pulls into the driveway, your lights will shine brightly to illuminate their path, then turn off automatically. You can choose how long your lights stay on before shutting off.

You can adjust your motion activation settings in the Ring App to find the best setup for your home. For example, you can leave all your lights on dimly at night and set them to brighten if motion is detected. While you’ll use a little more energy keeping lights on, you’ll still conserve by keeping the brightness low when no one is around.
