How to Use Smart Security Lighting to Help Protect Your Home

By Ring on July 16, 2024

Smart security lighting can do much more than just brightening blind spots around your home. When you take advantage of all its smart features, you can help automate security and create a safer environment for you and your family.

Here’s how you can use Ring smart lighting to help add a layer of protection in and around your home.

Use Spotlights to Light Entryways

Adding Ring Spotlights above your back door, side entrances, and sliding doors can help give you a clear view as you go in and out of your home. If you’re hosting outside after dark a well-lit entrance, you can also help guests find their way safely inside.

Spotlights automatically turn on when motion is detected to help ensure there’s always light when it’s needed. A sudden burst of bright light may also deter any unwanted visitors who come by. Plus, you’ll get a notification if motion is detected, so you'll know if there’s activity when you’re not expecting it.

Light Large Areas With Floodlights

For the larger areas around your home that need more powerful lighting, consider installing Floodlights. With 2000 lumens of brightness, Floodlights are strong enough to illuminate your driveway, patio, or yard, making it easier to see what’s happening at night.

Like Spotlights, Floodlights power on when motion is activated and send a real-time notification to your phone. Whether your dog needs to take a light-night potty break or a friend drops by for dessert on a Saturday night, they’ll have plenty of light to get around safely.

Brighten Walkways With Pathlights and Step Lights

If you have to squint to see the path in front of you, you’re at risk of a stumble or fall. Placing Pathlights and Step Lights along your sidewalks, pavers, and outdoor stairs can help you and your guests see where you’re going.1

With a Ring Bridge (sold separately) you can set your lights to stay on for a few hours in the evening to signal that your home is protected.2 You can also rely on motion activation to save energy when no one’s outside.

Set Indoor Lighting Schedules

A completely dark home can be a giveaway that you’re not there. Whether you’re working late at the office or enjoying an extended vacation, your Ring A19 Smart LED Bulbs can help give the illusion that you never left.3

From the Ring App, you can turn your lights on and off from anywhere or set lighting schedules, so your bulbs automatically adjust at certain times of the day. Program your lights to turn on when you’re usually home to make it look like you’re following your day-to-day routine, even when you’re away.

Create Security Automations

While one Ring smart light is powerful on its own, it can do even more when connected to other devices. A Ring Bridge enables you to group lights in the Ring App and set entire groups to turn on when one light detects motion.2

For example, if something sets off the Spotlight above your back door, you can program all the other lights in the backyard to shine. These automations help illuminate your whole home when someone needs extra visibility without requiring you to constantly keep all your other lights on..

Link Lighting With Other Smart Security Devices

Smart security lighting can notify you when motion is detected, but it can’t tell you what triggered it. That’s what outdoor security cameras are for. If you get a notification, you can check Live View on your video doorbell or outdoor cams to check in.

A Ring Bridge (sold separately) gives you the ability to have cameras begin recording if a light detects motion.2 If something triggers a light when you’re fast asleep, you can check your footage later to see what caused the motion alert (requires a Ring Protect subscription, sold separately).4 You can even add Motion Sensors on the edges of your yard, so your lights and cameras turn on as soon as someone enters your property.

Elevate Your Whole-Home Security With Ring

When it comes to protecting your home, visibility is key. With handy automations and integration with your cameras, Ring Smart Lighting helps ensure you never miss an important moment.

For even more layers of protection around your home, add a Ring Alarm security system and indoor cameras to monitor activity inside. Ready to get started? Shop Alarm, cameras, and all your smart lighting options today.
