Data Privacy Day: Ring’s Commitment to Our Customers

By Ring on January 28, 2022

Every January 28th, the world observes Data Privacy Day to raise awareness and promote privacy and data best practices. At Ring, we take our customers’ privacy and security seriously, and that’s why we work hard every day to keep your personal information and data secure.

How We Protect Your Data

To help you keep your account credentials secure, Ring requires all customers to use complex passwords, and we encourage you to use unique email and password combinations. Sometimes, due to a data breach at another company, customers’ account usernames, email addresses, and passwords are exposed online. Many people use the same username or email address and password for multiple accounts, so proactively checking these lists of exposed passwords allows us to help protect your Ring account. Ring checks these lists of exposed usernames and passwords when you sign in, create a new password, or change your password. If we detect your credentials may have been exposed as part of a non-Ring breach, we prevent any new sign-ins until your password has been changed.

We also require all customers to use Two-Step Verification when logging into your Ring account. We support compatible authenticator apps in addition to existing methods like SMS. And, in the Ring and Neighbors App and on Ring.com, CAPTCHA acts as another safeguard to help prevent automated login attempts from bad actors.

Features To Fit Your Needs

We know that security isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution. That’s why, in addition to the steps Ring takes, we believe you should have the flexibility to customize your Ring devices and account settings to best fit your privacy and security needs. Whether you’re a long-time customer or new to the Ring family, we encourage you to explore some of our favorite tools, resources and features:

Control Center: From one easy-to-use dashboard in the Ring App you can view and control important privacy and security settings such as manage your authorized devices and video sharing permissions, choose your community and Neighbors App settings, and learn more about how Ring handles your personal information.

Advanced Video Encryption Options: By default, Ring encrypts videos when they are uploaded to the cloud (in transit) and stored on Ring’s servers (at rest). We also offer an advanced encryption option for customers who want that extra assurance: Video End-to-End Encryption. By enabling this feature, your videos are further secured with an additional lock, which can only be unlocked with a key that is stored on your enrolled mobile device.

Self-Service Device Transfer: We know life changes, and many of our customers may choose to move to a new home, upgrade their Ring device, or pass a used device on to someone else. With self-service device transfer, you can conveniently and securely initiate an ownership transfer of used Ring devices without having to make a call to Customer Support.

While we will always work to keep your accounts and information safe, we also know the importance of empowering you—our customers—with educational resources to help you use best practices when it comes to protecting your data. Visit the Ring Privacy Page for FAQs, as well as tips and tricks to help you keep all your online accounts safe.
