Introducing Familiar Faces: A New Way to See Who’s at Your Front Door

By Ring on December 9, 2025

Your front door is one of the busiest places in your home—from family members coming and going, to friends stopping by, to delivery drivers dropping off packages. It's a constant stream of activity, yet it can be hard to keep track of who's actually there—especially when you're away or in another room. To help with this, earlier this year we announced Familiar Faces—a new, intelligent feature that helps you quickly identify people you know when they appear at your door. Today, we're excited to share that Familiar Faces is now rolling out to Ring device owners in the U.S.

How Familiar Faces Works

Familiar Faces is designed to help you easily identify the people you see regularly at your door. The feature enables you to create a personal directory of up to 50 familiar faces, from family members and neighbors to regular delivery drivers. Once you've labeled someone in your Ring app, your device will recognize them when they're close to your camera. Instead of getting a generic "A person is at your door" alert, you'll receive a personalized notification like "Mom at Front Door.” It’s a game-changing way to keep you informed of who’s stopping by, especially if you can’t be there to greet them.

And, in addition to telling you who’s there, you can use Familiar Faces to personalize your alerts—like turning off notifications for yourself, while staying informed about visitors—to help reduce notification fatigue.

Getting Started
Familiar Faces is an opt-in feature, which means you need to turn it on to use it. To get started:

  • Turn on the feature in your Ring app settings.

  • Create custom labels for each person by adding people to your Familiar Faces library. You can name a face directly from your Event History or from the Familiar Faces library. Once named, that person's name will appear in notifications, timeline, and Event History. You can create up to 50 profiles in your library. You can edit names, merge duplicate profiles, or delete profiles at any time. Unused profiles are automatically removed after 30 days.

  • Choose notification preferences for each person.

  • Receive personalized notifications when familiar faces are detected.
  • Built with Privacy in Mind
Like all Ring features, privacy and control are built into the core of Familiar Faces. The feature is off by default, and only activates when you choose to turn it on. Here are other ways we’ve worked to ensure your privacy remains in your control:

  • You build your personal directory: Add up to 50 familiar faces and manage your library however you like. Update or remove entries anytime as your household changes.

  • It’s secure and private: Your face data is automatically encrypted and stays private to your account—it's never shared with anyone else.

  • It stays current with automatic housekeeping: Unnamed faces are removed after 30 days, keeping your system streamlined without extra effort from you.
  • Familiar Faces will begin rolling out to Ring device owners starting today. Customers with a Ring Premium subscription plan and an eligible 2k or 4k camera will receive a notification in their Ring app when the feature becomes available. Familiar Faces may not be available in certain geographies due to legislation, and customers should check local laws that may require obtaining consent prior to turning on the feature.
