User Permissions: Access Management for Businesses and Homes

For years, Ring customers have relied on Shared Users to grant family members and trusted individuals access to their security devices. While this system served its purpose, it came with limitations such as device-level sharing, basic permission controls, and challenges in managing access for complex household or business needs.

Today, we're announcing User Permissions, a significant evolution that replaces the traditional Shared User model with a more robust, flexible system. This new feature gives you customizable, location-level control over who can access your Ring devices and what actions they can perform. User Permissions transforms the previous binary access approach into role-based management, allowing you to tailor permissions to specific needs of each user.

Utility Whether You’re a Homeowner or a Business Owner

For homeowners, you can now grant limited access to trusted friends, family members, or service providers, without having to share your personal account credentials. This ensures that your master credentials remain secure while still allowing others to perform necessary tasks, such as checking in on your home or answering the door.

If you’re a business owner, you can assign specific roles and permissions that match each employee's responsibilities, while retaining full oversight and control. For example, front desk staff can access live footage and answer the door. Store managers now get expanded capabilities to manage device settings and user access for their respective locations.

User Permissions advances both privacy protection and permissions management with a more intelligent approach:

  • Grant the level of access needed, from Limited to Advanced
  • Maintain privacy by eliminating the need in some cases to share personal account credentials (e.g. when you booked a professional installer to setup your Ring devices)
  • Adjust permissions instantly as needs change
  • Understanding Your Permissions Options

    Ring's User Permissions system offers five distinct access levels, giving you precise control over what each person can do with your security system. Unlike the previous Shared User model, these permissions can be set at the location level, meaning you can grant someone access to your entire Ring setup at once, rather than managing individual device permissions.

  • LIMITED ACCESS: Perfect for contractors or store employees who need basic monitoring capabilities. They can tune in via Live View, check event history and view device dashboard—nothing more.
  • STANDARD ACCESS: Ideal for family members, trusted house sitters, or store managers. They get additional control over device features and security modes, making daily management easier.
  • ADVANCED ACCESS: Complete system control for those you trust most—whether it's your spouse or your regional manager. They can manage devices, user access, and all security settings.
  • INSTALLER ACCESS: Full access to the system with the same level as Advanced, but automatically limited to a maximum of 48 hours. Perfect for technicians who need temporary complete access for setup or troubleshooting.
  • OWNER: Full control and ownership of the location. Can also manage subscriptions and payment methods.
  • Where You Can Find User Permissions

    User Permissions are easy to find in the Ring App. Just tap on Account>Settings>Permissions.

    Important! If you have Shared Users today, they will receive Standard access by default. You can change this at any time in Settings.
